The Einstein Bros Bagels Facebook campaign has been one of the most successful and talked-about coupon applications on Facebook. The app, which was launched in January, urged users to become fans of the company’s Facebook fan page, and in return, provides fans with a printable coupon for a free bagel and schmear at any participating store location. The app also encourages users to share the deal with friends by posting it on their walls, thereby driving more attention (and fans) to the company’s Facebook page.

Since its inception, the company’s Facebook fan page has ballooned to nearly 400k fans (from slightly under 5k prior to the promotional campaign). The campaign’s success has observers like Fast Company magazine saying, “Is Free the Social Media Marketing Campaign of the Future?”
